This course is designed to introduce the analytical techniques and test methods applied to characterize the chemical composition and mechanical properties of flexible pavement materials, including but not limited to asphalt binders. Theoretical models used to describe the chemistry, microstructure, rheology and strength of binders will be addressed in conjuction with experimental data and existing knowledge in chemo-mechanics. Demonstration and hands on practice using, among others, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy and Microextraction for chemical analyses and Dynamic Shear Rheometer and Poker Chip for mechanical analyses are included in the course. Connections between chemistry and distresses at high level (e.g., moisture damage, aging, rutting, cracking, self healing) are also discussed, focusing primarily on changes to asphalt chemistry, oxidation and future pathways.
