2023 APSE Awards

These awards were given during the APSE 2023 Annual Meeting in Washington D.C by Dr. Eyad Masad (Universidad de Texas at Qatar) APSE President, Dr. Amit Bhasin (University of Texas at Austin), Chair of the Awards Committee,  and Dr. Imad Al-Qadi, University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, Board of Governor.

DESCRIPTION OF APSE AWARDS

One of the ways APSE promotes the field of pavement science and engineering (PS&E) is by recognizing the excellent work of its students, associate, and academic members from all levels and sub-disciplines throughout the world.  This section describes the APSE annual awards and the selection process of the recipients.

Nominees must be active, dues paying members of APSE in the year in which they are nominated. The APSE Executive Officers will select and announce the recipients within a month of closing the nomination process. The recognition of the awardees will take place during the APSE annual meeting, which will take place during the 2024 Transportation Research Board (TRB) Meeting.  

APSE Distinguished Lecture Award

1. Eligibility:  This award recognizes the outstanding research contributions and impact of a pioneer and a leader in the PS&E community.  The nominee must be an APSE Academic Member in the year that the nomination is made. 

2. Nomination: APSE will initiate the nomination process in October of every year, and the nominations will be open for about two months. Any APSE Academic Member can make the nomination. The nomination material must include: i) the APSE nomination form, and ii) CV of the nominee that includes areas of the selection criteria. 

3. Selection criteria: The selection will be based on the outstanding impact of the nominee’s work in teaching, service, and/or research in the field of PS&E.  

4. The Executive Officers will decide on the event at which the lecture will be delivered.  Preferably, it will take place in a major event that is sponsored by APSE and has considerable participation of its members.  Alternatively, the lecture might be delivered via a video conference platform in an event dedicated specifically for this award.

5. Nomination deadline: 20 December 2023 for awards to be announced in the 2024 annual meeting. 

Outstanding Academic Member Award

1. Number of awards: No more than two awards will be given in a year. 

2. Eligibility: This award recognizes academic members of APSE who distinguished themselves for their outstanding contributions in the field of PS&E.  The nominee must have a rank of assistant professor, associate professor, or equivalent titles at the time of nomination.  The nominee must be an active APSE Academic Member in the year that the nomination is made. 

3. Nomination: APSE will initiate the nomination process in October of every year, and the nominations will be open for about two months. Any APSE Academic Member can make the nomination. The nomination material must include: i) the APSE nomination form, and ii) CV of the nominee that includes areas of the selection criteria. 


4. Selection criteria: The selection will be primarily based on the following factors: a) recognizable contributions in one or more of the three areas: (i) teaching or curriculum development, (ii) service to the professional community, and (iii) research.

b) active participation and leadership in APSE’s committees, sponsored conferences, and/or programs

5. Nomination deadline: 20 December 2023 for awards to be announced in the 2024 annual meeting. 

Associate Member Award 

1. Number of awards: No more than two awards will be given in a year.

2. Eligibility: The nominee must be an active APSE Associate Member In the year that the nomination is made

3. Nomination: APSE will initiate the nomination process in October of every year, and the nominations will be open for about two months. Any APSE Academic Member can make the nomination. The nomination material must include: i) the APSE nomination form, and ii) CV of the nominee that includes areas of the selection criteria. 


4. Selection criteria: The selection will be primarily based on the following factors: a) noticeable contributions in one or more of the three areas: (i) teaching or curriculum development, (ii) service to the professional community, and (iii) research.

b) involvement in APSE’s committees, sponsored conferences, and/or programs. 

5. Nomination deadline: 20 December 2023 for awards to be announced in the 2024 annual meeting.

Student Member Award

1. Number of awards: No more than two awards will be given in a year.

2. Eligibility: The nominee must be an active APSE Student Member in the year that the nomination is made. 

3. Nomination: APSE will initiate the nomination process in October of every year, and the nominations will be open for about two months. Any APSE Academic Member or Associate Member can make the nomination. The nomination material must include: i) the APSE nomination form, and ii) CV of the nominee that includes areas of the selection criteria. 

4. Selection criteria: The selection will be primarily based on:  a) noticeable contributions in teaching, professional service, and/or research. b) involvement in APSE’s committees, sponsored conferences, and/or programs. 

5. Nomination deadline: 20 December 2023 for awards to be announced in the 2024 annual meeting.

Notes

Nominations should be sent to the following APSE email address: admin@pavementsacademy.onmicrosoft.com. The APSE Awards Committee will review all nominations. The committee will then have a discussion round in which they share their views on the nominations. Finally, there will be a vote and the nominee with the highest number of votes in a given category is awarded. The APSE Awards Committee may revise award requirements for future years.
